About Ooty

The very word Ooty conjures up images of sensuous hills and breathtaking views. It is popularly referred to as ’ the Queen of hill stations ’. It was once the most preferred destination of the British. Blessed with salubrious climate throughout the year, it was developed by John Sullivan, a British national. The quaint town spread over approximately 36 sq.miles still retains the charm of the ‘British Raj’ era.

Heritage Train

The Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) line has been granted World Heritage Status by UNESCO is bound to warm the cockies of heritage lovers.The Alternate Biting Tooth (Abt) system which operates on most mountain railways in the world also works for the Ooty train.

Interestingly, the name of the man who invented this system was also Michael Abt. On an average for every 12.5 feet the Ooty train travels the height or altitude rises by one foot. The Nilgiris Passenger, as the NMR is called, began its journey in 1899 after decades of pioneering challenges

Dodabetta, which is the second highest peak in South India, at 8640 feet, offers a spectacular view of entire Nilgiris biosphere and regions stretching as far as the plains of Mysore.

Ooty is the headquarters of the Nilgiris district. The Nilgiri district consists of Ooty, Conoor, Kotagiri and Gudalur towns. Each one of these towns is a hill station in its own right, offering visitors a spectacular bounty of nature.
